Federally Funded Research Is Innovating Cancer Care
At UC Davis, oncologist Dr. Joseph Tuscano leads federally funded research in two critical areas: 1) Developing Novel Anti-Cancer Drugs from Natural Products: Dr. Tuscano investigates natural compounds, such as fermented wheat germ extract, for their potential to combat cancers like lymphoma and leukemia. His studies have shown that these natural products can activate the body’s natural killer cells, offering a promising avenue for non-toxic cancer therapies. 2) Creating Less Toxic Treatments for Malignant Lymphoma: Recognizing the high mortality rate and severe side effects associated with current lymphoma treatments, Dr. Tuscano’s research aims to develop therapies that are both effective and less harmful. His team is exploring innovative approaches, including immune-based therapies and targeted drug delivery systems, to improve patient outcomes while minimizing adverse effects.

If federal funding is reduced, that will reduce our ability to develop new drugs for these devastating diseases. Potentially the costs will continue to rise and more people will potentially succumb to cancer without the development of new drugs.”
