Everyone who wants their garden to be more than just another pretty space is invited to attend an edible-garden workshop at the University of California, Davis.

“Your Sustainable Backyard: Edible Landscaping” will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 6, in Ballroom B of UC Davis’ Activities and Recreation Center. It is coordinated by the California Center for Urban Horticulture at UC Davis and the Statewide Master Gardener Program.

Keynote speaker will be Rosalind Creasy, a pioneer in the field of edible landscaping and author of the new book “Edible Landscaping: Now You Can Have Your Garden and Eat It Too!”

Kevin Marini of the master gardener and composter programs in Placer and Nevada counties will talk about maintaining healthy soils for edible gardens, and UC Davis entomology professor Michael Parrella will explain how to manage pests in a sustainable vegetable garden.

Gardening stations, staffed by master gardeners, will provide information on a variety of topics including community gardening, composting and vermicomposting, water conservation, irrigation design and management, eco-friendly garden pest management, and sustainable landscape practices.

The workshop will conclude with a vegetable starts plant sale, offered by UC Davis students with proceeds benefiting the Botany/Horticulture Club.

This event is open to the public, with a registration fee of $45 per person, which covers workshop materials, morning coffee and lunch.
