Several weeks ago campus community members were invited to create photos involving any of the late ceramic artist Robert Arneson's seven Egghead creations on campus. Billed as "Hatch a Photo," the contest took place Feb. 1 to March 2. Winners, culled from more than 100 entries, were recently chosen:

Non-student winners

First place — Nancy Morrow, Heads in the Clouds. Judge's comment: "Very charming and poignant use of the image and of Photoshop." Morrow is a lecturer in the University Writing Program.

Second place — Susie Nishio, with Elise Tidrick, Lindsay Davison, Chris Wallis and Evan Wallis, Plopper Lab Eggheads. Nishio is a staff research associate working in Charles Plopper's veterinary medicine laboratory.

Honorable mentions

  • Nicole Docimo, Cannibalism #3. Docimo is a binding services assistant at Shields Library.
  • Sam Sellers, A Rivalry. Sellers is a staff artist with the School of Law.
  • Diana Coleman, Stargazer Stargazes. Coleman co-owns a new business, Coleman Photographic Images, with her husband in Sacramento.

Student winners

First place — Erica Coye, Watching (You). The photographer is an anthropology senior from San Jose.

Second place — Kimberley Yeh with Yousif Abudra, Over Easy. Yeh is a senior from San Francisco majoring in international relations.

The two first-place winners receive $200 gift certificates to the UC Davis Bookstore. Second-place awards receive $100 gift certificates to the bookstore.

Contest judges were Renny Pritikin of the Nelson Art Gallery; Larry Bogad, UC Davis Theatre and Dance; and Annabeth Rosen, the Robert Arneson Chair in Ceramic Sculpture, UC Davis Art and Art History.

Sponsors were the Department of Art and Art History; Division of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies; Nelson Art Gallery; and University Communications.
