Those bright yellow tags popping up on parked bicycles around campus mean the bikes themselves will soon start disappearing. Once a bike is tagged, the bike owner has 48 hours to move his or her bike — or TAPS can haul it off.

“Abandoned bicycles take up valuable bike parking spaces, are unsightly, may present tripping hazards and can tempt thieves,” said David Takemoto-Weerts, Bicycle Program coordinator for Transportation and Parking Services, or TAPS.

He said TAPS picks up about 1,000 bicycles annually. TAPS attempts to track down the owners of bikes that are registered. After three months, all unclaimed bikes are designated for auction; the public sales are held in October and May.

So, if you have a bike on campus, and you do not use it regularly, you are advised to move it by May 24.
