UPDATED NEWS BRIEFS: Lecturers ratify labor deal

UCOP: Lecturers ratify labor deal

The UC Office of the President announced Oct. 17 that the lecturers bargaining unit of the American Federation of Teachers had ratified a three-year labor agreement for the unit's more than 3,000 members.

A news release gave these highlights of the contract that runs through Sept. 30, 2014:

  • Participation in a one-time (2011-12) salary increase program for nonrepresented faculty and staff — a program that is based on individual performance. Eligible lecturers will receive 3 percent increases effective Oct. 1, 2011.
  • Participation in the annual academic merit program for 2012-13 and 2013-14, for which lecturers as academic employees will be eligible as are all nonrepresented, nonstudent academic employees.
  • The university and the union will reopen salary negotiations in 2012-13 and 2013-14.
  • Lecturers will pay the same rates for health care benefits as Acdemic Senate faculty and nonrepresented employees.
  • Lecturers will contribute to the UC Retirement Plan at the same rate as senate faculty and other nonrepresented employees.
  • The university and the union will negotiate any structural post-employment benefit changes to the UC Retirement Plan for 2013-14.

The UCOP news release stated that the negotiations also resulted in changes to many contract terms, including but not limited to continuing appointments, discipline and dismissal, instructional workload and layoffs.

On Sept. 10, UCOP announced that three other bargaining units had ratified labor agreements:

  • American Federation of Teachers, representing the university's more than 350 librarians.
  • American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, representing more than 20,000 employees at campuses and medical centers, in two bargaining units, one for patient care staff (such as hospital assistants and hospital laboratory technicians) and the other for service workers (such as custodians and mail processors).

Free e-waste collection

The Bargain Barn is once again offering to take e-waste off your hands for free. But take note: This e-waste collection will not be at the Bargain Barn.

The collection, for university units only, is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 19) at the Hopkins Services Complex, 615 Hopkins Road, across from the University Airport.

The Bargain Barn will take all university-owned, nonfunctioning desktop (or smaller) electronic items. The e-waste will be turned over to the campus’s contracted vendor, California Electronic Asset Recovery, for environmentally safe disposal.

The Bargain Barn will not accept items with UC Davis property stickers, or items that require decommissioning or contain hazardous chemicals.

E-waste guidelines. For more information, contact the Bargain Barn, (530) 752-2145 or bargainbarn@ucdavis.edu.

The Bargain Barn plans to close at 11 a.m. Oct. 19 to get ready for the e-waste collection. Directions to the Hopkins Services Complex: Take Hutchison Drive west from Highway 113, turn left on Hopkins Road and right on Apiary Drive. Turn left at the second driveway.
