University Communications summer intern Erin Childs designed the 2012-13 poster calendar. University photographer Gregory Urquiaga took the main photo on a rainy, winter day, of a bicyclist riding past the Segundo Dining Commons.

Only two more days on your campus poster calendar — so it's time for a new one. And they are here, available (while supplies last) at all UC Davis Stores, or you can have calendars delivered.

The calendars — folded or rolled — cost 90 cents each before the 10 percent departmental discount.

Folded calendars will be delivered for free. If you want rolled calendars, you can pay to have them delivered for $2.50 (shipping materials fee, per order), or you can pick them up at the main store (Memorial Union) or the medical center store in Sacramento.

Sarah Brodberg at UC Davis Stores is still taking orders by email: sabrodberg@ucdavis.edu. Orders should include department name, contact name, phone number, delivery location (room number and building), quantity or quantities (folded and rolled), and DaFIS account of billing ID.

Bookstore purchase orders also are acceptable, with the same information, via fax, (530) 752-4791.

Note: If you faxed a preorder to (530) 754-7819, you will need to send it in again to a different number: (530) 752-4791.

Professor co-chairs international entomology conference

Professor Walter Leal helped convince the International Congress of Entomology to hold its quadrennial meeting in the United States and now he is co-chairing the organizing committee.

The announcement came today (Aug. 24) from the 2012 congress, which wraps up tomorrow in Daegu, South Korea.

The next meeting is scheduled Sept. 25-30, 2016, in Orlando, Fla. — the first time the congress has met in the United States in 40 years. The meetings typically draw more than 6,000 entomologists.

Leal, former chair of the Department of Entomology, served on the committee that submitted the U.S. bid, in an effort spearheaded by the Entomological Society of America. His co-chair on the organizing committee is Alvin Simmons, a research entomologist with the U.S. Vegetable Laboratory, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service.

The 25th congress will run concurrently with the 64th meeting of the Entomological Society of America.

The meeting will allow “a unique opportunity for scientists to interact with the world’s leading experts in many fields, to exchange ideas and build on their research,” said Leal, a chemical ecologist who is a pioneer in the field of insect communication.

The International Congress of Entomology met for the first time in Brussels, in 1910. Since then, the congress has met every four years, with interruptions during World Wars I and II. The last congress in the United States took place in Washington, D.C., in 1976.

Retiree Center moving to Buehler

The Retiree Center is moving from the Conference Center to another south campus building: the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center. Both buildings front the Vanderhoef Quad.

Sue Barnes, coordinator, said she and her staff are packing today (Aug. 24) and will start the move on Monday (Aug. 27).

“We will check e-mails and voice mails as we can, but service may be interrupted for several days,” she said.

The Retiree Center will be on the first floor, in the suite of offices to the left of the main entrance.

“Once we are settled in, we will plan an open house in our new space,” Barnes said.

She said the new suite will provide much needed additional space, including three offices and a reception area, as well as more storage space.

Blood drive Aug. 28-29 on the Quad

The second ASUCD Blood and Marrow Drive of the summer will bring a traditional summertime treat (ice cream) and a new treat (MyBloodSource, including a rewards program).

The blood drive is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday (Aug. 28 and 29).

“Summer is still one of the hardest times for blood banks,” said Brie Leon of the Sacramento-based BloodSource, which will park its bloodmobiles on the west side of the Quad. “If you can encourage your friends, co-workers and fellow students to attend, we would greatly appreciate it. The need for blood is constant and we always need to be prepared.”

She said each participant will receive a coupon for a free pint of Baskin-Robbins ice cream.

Also, she said, donors are invited to sign up for MyBloodSource, a new addition to the BloodSource website. With a MyBloodSource account, a donor can review his or her donations and physical data (temperature, pulse, blood pressure and the like on donation days), schedule appointments for donations, and track rewards points that can be redeemed for such gifts as movie tickets, T-shirts and e-readers.

“Those who come out to the blood drive will get points and the Baskin-Robbins coupon — a double win,” Leon said.

Prospective donors are advised to bring photo ID, and to drink plenty of fluids and to eat before donating.

For more information or to volunteer, contact Leon at (916) 416-9459 or brie.leon@bloodsource.org.
