UPDATED: Holiday reminders on energy, data, police, fire, facilities and more

Three important things to remember plus other useful information for winter break:

1. Turn off and unplug, to save energy. See Campus Energy Checklist.

2. If you plan to come to your office, bring a sweater — because the heat will be turned down in many buildings, also to save energy. See the list of affected buildings.

3. The Davis Campus Data Center will have a planned service interruption starting at 7 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 26, lasting from 12 to 48 hours. Read more.

The service interruption will hold up all campus e-mail and shut down most of the other computing services that are hosted by the data center. This includes the systems for online grade submission and student fee payments.

With winter quarter fees due by 11:59 p.m. Dec. 28, officials are advising students (and parents) to pay their fees before the service interruption.

The official winter holidays are Friday, Dec. 24, and the following Monday, Dec. 27, and Thursday and Friday, Dec. 30 and 31. Winter quarter instruction begins Monday, Jan. 3.

Many units and departments around the campus will be closed from Dec. 24 through Jan. 2, as employees opt to combine their winter holidays with vacation time, compensatory time or leave without pay, to extend their break between Christmas and New Year’s.

Police and fire personnel will be working, of course — and your assistance is needed, if you happen to be on campus.

“If you see anything amiss, please call it in,” said police Lt. Matt Carmichael, adding that policed would rather err on the side of caution — and make the call — even if you think what you see might be nothing.

As always, he said, for a life-threatening situation, people should call 911 or (530) 752-1230 from cell phones. Otherwise, call the nonemergency number: (530) 752-1727.

Carmichael also advised people to be cautious if they are working alone. For example, he said, keep your office or lab door locked while working inside, and ask who’s there before opening the door. And, if you are wary of walking along to your car, call for a police escort.

The Facilities Management dispatch center will be up and running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with crews available to respond to emergencies. The number is (530) 752-1655.
