Update 11:30 a.m. March 17: You can still be the early bird who gets the discount rate and high-performance running shirt — the Stride for Aggie Pride 5K on May 18 is extending its early registration deadline through April 4.

Runners, walkers, volunteers and others who want to support UC Davis student scholarships are invited to turn out for the second annual Stride for Aggie Pride 5K on campus on Sunday, May 18.

Participants who sign up before Friday, March 14, will receive a registration discount and be guaranteed availability of high-performance running shirt.

Founded last year, the event is now officially a program of Student Affairs and has gained status as one of the campus’s 50 Aggie Traditions identified by the Cal Aggie Alumni Association.

“Students and staff created and are continuing the Stride for Aggie Pride as a fun way to raise funds for scholarships and promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, one that fosters mental and physical well-being,” said Artem Trotsyuk, who founded the event in his final year as an undergraduate and now works as an interdisciplinary health fellow for Student Affairs.

In 2013, the Stride for Aggie Pride drew more than 1,700 participants and raised nearly $17,500 for scholarships offered through the Associated Students of UC Davis and We Are Aggie Pride, a student-run organization that provides emergency funds for students in need.

The event, which is open to the public, will open at 9 a.m. with warm-up activities on the Quad, and the race is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Cheering volunteers and motivational signs will encourage participants along the 3.1-mile course, which will showcase the arboretum and other scenic areas. Strollers and pets are welcome.

After the race, the family friendly event will include activities and information booths provided by campus departments and area businesses, live music and student performances. Registered participants will be eligible for prize drawings that include a Kaplan academic preparation course, merchandise from the San Francisco Giants, UC Davis Stores apparel and more.

Event sponsors include Student Affairs, Campus Recreation and Unions, Kaplan, UC Davis West Village, Fleet Feet Sports in Davis and UC Davis Stores.
