UPCOMING EVENTS: Sunday with Mozart, McNeil Jubilee Singers

SUNDAY WITH MOZART: A two-year celebration of Mozart's birth is coming to an end at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, with one last pair of concerts. They are scheduled for June 3 as the final installment of the Alexander String Quartet's Sundays with Mozart series.

The concerts are scheduled to begin at 2 and 8 p.m. in the Studio Theatre.

The program lists Mozart's String Quartet No. 19 in C Major, K. 465, known as the Dissonant quartet for its unusual introduction, which sustains a surprising degree of harmonic ambiguity before resolving into the cheerful C-major theme; and Haydn's String Quartet No. 60 in G Major, op. 76, No. 1, which similarly sets a lively, major-key theme against a shifting harmonic background.

Educator and composer Robert Greenberg is due to deliver remarks about Mozart's life and music. The Mondavi's Mozart celebration began in 2006 to mark the 250th anniversary of the year of his birth.

McNEIL JUBILEE SINGERS: UC Davis music professor emeritus Albert McNeil and his Jubilee Singers are set to join the University Chorus and Chamber Singers for a concert at 8 p.m. June 3 in the Mondavi Center's Jackson Hall.

The program will highlight compositions by African-American composers-arrangers, and will conclude with a gospel mass, according to the UC Davis Department of Music.

McNeil directed choral activities at UC Davis for 21 years and also headed the music education program.

In founding the Jubilee Singers, he dedicated himself to upholding a tradition of excellence in the presentation of classical African-American spirituals. Under his direction the group has performed in 70 countries, in addition to a score of transcontinental U.S. and Canadian tours.
