Old newspaper photo shows the ceremonial christening of one of the first two Unitrans buses in November 1967. The used double- deckers from London started carrying passengers on Feb. 28, 1968, and 40 years later Unitrans is still famous for its double- deckers. One of them is pictured at right on Feb. 15, with conductor Liz Burciaga, a fourth-year dramatic arts major, preparing to take her post on the E line bus. She is pictured at the Memorial Union Terminal, just north of the MU, site of Unitrans’ 40th birthday party set for noon Feb. 29. At that time, Unitrans plans to rechristen its cleaner fleet, symbolized by a double-decker converted from diesel to compressed natural gas. That evening, the public is invited to a panel discussion with some key figures in the history of Unitrans, founded by students and still largely run by students today. The discussion is set for 6 p.m. in the Shields Library lobby, near the exhibit Unitrans at 40: Moving Students Through the Decades. The birthday celebration continues March 1 when Unitrans will offer free rides from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on double-deckers running on the system’s original routes, A and B.
