UC Riverside Department Chair Named Faculty Relations Vice Provost at UC Davis

Carol Tomlinson-Keasey, professor and chair of the psychology department at the University of California, Riverside, has been appointed vice provost for faculty relations at UC Davis, effective July 1. She succeeds Acting Vice Provost Allan Edelson, professor of mathematics, who will return to teaching and research. In her new post, Tomlinson-Keasey, 49, will be responsible for academic personnel policy and process, grievance procedures, affirmative action, faculty development and management training for academic leaders and supervisors. "Carol especially strikes me as one who has the right combination of rigor, goal direction and sensitivity to guide the evolution of the faculty personnel process," said Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Larry N. Vanderhoef. "She recognizes that 'faculty personnel' are, after all, a cherished resource of real human beings -- for whom we work. "And she has academic credibility. That will allow her to lead where others could not. At the same time she understands that the trains must run on time, especially for the already lengthy personnel process." Psychology department chair since 1989, Tomlinson-Keasey served as acting dean of UCR's College of Humanities and Social Sciences from 1986 to 1988 with administrative responsibility for a $15 million budget, 160 faculty members and 75 staff members. She was associate dean of the college in 1986, a graduate adviser in the psychology department from 1983 to 1986, and chair of the human development program from 1978 to 1986. Before joining UCR, she held faculty appointments at Rutgers, 1970-72, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 1972-1978. "I'm delighted to be joining the Davis campus with its outstanding faculty and visionary administration," said Tomlinson-Keasey. "I expect to work closely with chairs of the departments and deans of colleges to continue the tradition of faculty excellence already established." UC Davis Chancellor Theodore L. Hullar, who worked with Tomlinson-Keasey when he was chancellor of UC Riverside, said she "will bring to us her special human qualities, her deep commitment to the University of California and its standards, and her strong and balanced abilities as a faculty member and leader." A licensed psychologist, Tomlinson-Keasey is the author of two books: "A Child's Eye View" and "Child Development: Psychological, Sociocultural and Biological Factors." Another book, "Gifted Women: Predicting Their Life Paths," is in preparation. She has written more than 50 articles, chapters and monographs and delivered a similar number of papers at professional meetings. Her scholarship has been supported by grants from such organizations as the Exxon Education Foundation, the American Psychological Association, the National Institute of Aging, the Mensa Foundation, the Spencer Foundation and the Bouchard Foundation. Her honors include UCR's distinguished teaching award, the YWCA's Woman of Achievement in Science award, and membership in Sigma Xi research honorary and Psi Chi psychology honorary. She is affiliated with the American Psychological Association, the Society for Research in Child Development, the American Psychological Society and the International Society for the Study of Behavioral Development. Tomlinson-Keasey received a bachelor's degree in political science in 1964 from Pennsylvania State University, a master's degree in psychology in 1966 from Iowa State University and a doctorate in developmental psychology in 1970 from UC Berkeley.
