FROM THE UC OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT ... UC to ‘Show the Colors’ on Tuesday; search for Irvine chancellor under way

UC to 'Show the Colors' on Tuesday

Advocates from across the UC system will gather in Sacramento Monday and Tuesday for a lineup of legislative meetings and special ceremonies as part of UC Day 2005. UC Day in Sacramento, set for Tuesday, is the one time of the year when all nine UC alumni associations come together with their alumni, donors and friends to discuss with elected representatives issues of concern to the university. In addition, special ceremonies will acknowledge UC’s academic excellence and its contribution to the state. The theme of the 2005 event is “Show the Colors.” UC alumni delegates will meet with state legislators during the day Tuesday and then will gather for an evening reception at which the Alumni Associations of UC will honor several California legislators with the “Legislator of the Year Award.” The awards honor outstanding legislators who have helped shape the future of higher education in California. A UC Advocate of the Year will also be recognized. For more information about UC Day, see http://www.ucday.org.

Dynes names panel as search for new Irvine chancellor begins

UC President Robert Dynes has named a 17-member committee of university regents, faculty, staff, students, alumni and community representatives to advise him in the search for the next chancellor of UC Irvine.

The committee's first meeting is set for Feb. 11 at UC Irvine, where committee members will meet in closed session with faculty, staff, students and community representatives to gather ideas and comments regarding the search and to learn the distinct needs of the Irvine campus.

On Monday, the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., announced that UC Irvine Chancellor Ralph Cicerone was officially elected president, effective July 1. Cicerone was nominated to the presidency last June.

Cicerone, the third UC affiliate to serve as NAS president, would succeed current president Bruce Alberts, a cellular biologist on the faculty of UC San Francisco. Cicerone will continue to serve as UCI chancellor through the 2004-05 academic year.

Cicerone, an atmospheric chemist, has served as UCI chancellor since April 1998. He also holds the Daniel G. Aldrich Jr. Chair in Earth System Science and serves as professor of chemistry.

Chartered by Congress in 1863, the academy is a private, non-profit, self-perpetuating society of distinguished scholars dedicated to furthering science and technology for the general welfare. Election to the academy is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a scientist or engineer.

Dynes hopes to bring a candidate for UC Irvine chancellor to the Board of Regents by late spring. For more details, see http://www.uci.edu/chancellor_search.
