UC Davis Awards 7,000-Plus Degrees for 2005-06

The University of California, Davis, will award an estimated 7,335 degrees for 2005-06 as it completes the academic year with 12 commencements. The School of Education also will recognize 119 students who have completed studies for teaching credentials.

Ceremonies are scheduled through June 18, and guest speakers include Barbara Kerr, president of the California Teachers Association on June 14; U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, on June 18; and William Sullivan, president and chief executive officer of Agilent Technologies, on June 17.

School of Medicine

Faith Fitzgerald, a professor and assistant dean at the School of Medicine who recently was elected a regent of the American College of Physicians, will speak at the School of Medicine's commencement at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, in the Mondavi Center.

The school will award a total of 93 Doctor of Medicine and 14 Master of Public Health degrees.

School of Education

Kerr, president of the teachers union, will speak at the School of Education ceremony at 4 p.m. on June 14 in the Mondavi Center.

The school will recognize the recipients of 29 doctoral degrees and 95 master's degrees as well as 119 students who have completed studies for teaching credentials. The numbers for doctoral and master's degrees are included in totals for Graduate Studies.

Graduate Studies

Graduate Studies will award about 312 doctorates and 560 master's degrees. Its ceremony will be at 6:30 p.m. on June 15 in the ARC Pavilion.

College of Biological Sciences

The College of Biological Sciences will recognize recipients of some 980 Bachelor of Science, 30 Bachelor of Arts, and five Bachelor of Arts and Science degrees. Its ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on June 16 in the ARC Pavilion.

These numbers are included among those degrees awarded by the College of Letters and Science and by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

College of Engineering

The College of Engineering will confer about 570 B.S. degrees in a 3 p.m. ceremony on June 16 in the ARC Pavilion.

School of Veterinary Medicine

The School of Veterinary Medicine will hold its graduation ceremony at 7:30 p.m. on June 16 in the ARC Pavilion. It will award 124 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees, 15 Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine degrees, seven B.S. degrees and 36 certificates recognizing completion of residency.

College of Letters and Science

The college will award about 2,700 B.A., 900 B.S. and 95 B.A.S. degrees -- for a total of 3,695 degrees this year. Its two programs will be held at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on June 17 in the ARC Pavilion.

Graduate School of Management

Sullivan, who is Agilent's president and CEO, will speak at the commencement of the Graduate School of Management at 10 a.m. on June 17 in Freeborn Hall.

This year, the school will award Master of Business Administration degrees to 59 candidates from its full-time program and 77 from its Working Professionals program. In addition, seven students successfully completed the Business Development Certificate Program.

College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences

Congressman Thompson will speak at both the 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. ceremonies of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in the ARC Pavilion on June 18. The college will award about 1,600 B.S. degrees.

School of Law

At a ceremony May 20, the law school awarded 11 Master of Laws degrees and 188 Juris Doctor degrees. Bill Lockyer, California's attorney general and Democratic candidate for state treasurer, spoke.

Webcasts

The campus will offer live and on-demand webcasts of each of the commencements held in the ARC Pavilion. Closer to graduation time, a link will be posted on the campus's home page at http://www.ucdavis.edu. Archived ceremonies will be available at http://commencement.ucdavis.edu.

Degree Numbers

Numbers of degrees include those earned since last spring's commencement season, including those awarded at two December commencements, and estimates of those to be awarded at ceremonies this year.

The Office of Resource Management and Planning estimates the number of degrees to be awarded by the undergraduate colleges; Graduate Studies and the five professional schools estimate the number of degrees they will award. An audit of the actual number of degrees awarded is prepared later.

In 2004-05, the university awarded 7,399 degrees including 5,735 bachelor's, 873 master's, 389 doctoral and 402 professional degrees.
