Editor's Note: The office of California Assembly Speaker Emeritus Fabian Núñez, D-Los Angeles, confirmed today (June 10) that he was cancelling his speaking engagement at the School of Education commencement ceremony on Wednesday, June 11. His office confirmed that he would not speak because the University of California and the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees have yet to reach agreement on contracts for two bargaining units. Representatives of UC and AFSCME are scheduled to meet Wednesday and Thursday to continue negotiations for a new contact for patient care technical workers, and the parties are working to schedule their next meeting to discuss a new contract for service employees.

The University of California, Davis, will award more than 7,300 degrees for 2007-08 as it completes the academic year with 12 commencements. The School of Education also will recognize 126 students who have completed studies for teaching credentials.

Ceremonies are scheduled through Sunday, June 15, and guest speakers include California Assembly Speaker Emeritus Fabian Núñez, D-Los Angeles, on Wednesday, June 11; Booker Holton, principal of Tova Applied Science and Technology in Orinda, on Thursday, June 12; Lee A. McIntire, president and chief operating officer of the engineering consulting firm CH2M Hill, on Saturday, June 14; and Craig McNamara, who owns Sierra Orchards in Winters and teaches land stewardship through the Center for Land-Based Learning, on Sunday, June 15.

School of Medicine

Dr. Jorge Garcia, an associate professor of clinical medicine with the UC Davis Health System, will speak at the School of Medicine ceremony at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, in the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. The school will award about 95 Doctor of Medicine and 17 Master of Public Health degrees.

School of Education

Núñez will speak at the School of Education ceremony at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, at the Mondavi Center. The school will recognize recipients of 27 doctoral degrees and 105 master's degrees as well as 126 students who have completed studies for teaching credentials. The numbers for doctoral and master's degrees are included in totals for Graduate Studies.

Graduate Studies

Holton, a 1980 graduate of UC Davis, will speak at the Graduate Studies commencement at 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, in the ARC Pavilion. Graduate Studies will award about 387 doctoral and 516 master's degrees.

College of Biological Sciences

The College of Biological Sciences will award an estimated 620 Bachelor of Science, and 15 Bachelor of Arts degrees. Its ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 13, in the ARC Pavilion.

As this young college transitions to awarding its own undergraduate degrees, an additional 220 B.S. degrees for the college will be awarded by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. As well, the College of Letters and Science will award 305 B.S. and 15 B.A. degrees for the newer college. These numbers are included in the totals for the colleges of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and Letters and Science.

School of Veterinary Medicine

The School of Veterinary Medicine will hold its graduation ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 13, in the Mondavi Center. It will award 114 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees, 21 Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine degrees and six B.S. degrees. A total of 39 individuals have earned certificates recognizing completion of residency.

College of Engineering

The College of Engineering will confer about 490 B.S. degrees in a 3 p.m. ceremony on Friday, June 13, in the ARC Pavilion.

Graduate School of Management

McIntire, who served as executive-in-residence at the Graduate School of Management in spring 2005 and is a member of the dean's advisory council, will speak at the school's commencement at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, at the Mondavi Center. The management school will award 155 Master of Business Administration degrees. Eight students successfully completed the school's Business Development Certificate Program.

College of Letters and Science

The college will award about 2,600 B.A., 675 B.S. and 50 Bachelor of Arts and Science degrees -- for a total of 3,325 degrees this year. Its two programs will be held at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, in the ARC Pavilion.

College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences

McNamara, who graduated with a bachelor's degree from UC Davis in 1976, will speak at both ceremonies for the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, in the ARC Pavilion. The college will award about 1,350 B.S. degrees.

School of Law

At a ceremony May 17, the law school awarded 18 Master of Laws and 198 Juris Doctor degrees. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom spoke.

Degree numbers

Numbers of degrees include those earned since last spring's commencement season, including those awarded at two December commencements, and estimates of those to be awarded at ceremonies this year. Those earning certificates or completing studies for teaching credentials are not included in the degree total.

The Office of Resource Management and Planning estimates the numbers of degrees to be awarded by the undergraduate colleges; the five professional schools each estimate the numbers of degrees they will award; and numbers for Graduate Studies include degrees awarded to date and applications to graduate as of May 16. An audit of the actual number of degrees awarded is prepared later.

In 2006-07, the university awarded 7,773 degrees including 6,015 bachelor's, 882 master's, 474 doctoral and 402 professional degrees.
