Delaine Eastin, state superintendent of public instruction, will be among the guest speakers at commencement ceremonies of the University of California, Davis, through June 17. Others will be Roger Valine, president and chief executive officer of Vision Care Services, and William Close of Wyoming, a surgeon who supervised the logistics for the international medical team investigating the Ebola fever outbreak in Africa in the mid-1970s. The campus will award an estimated 5,863 degrees -- including 4,571 undergraduate, 443 master's, 341 doctoral and 508 professional degrees -- in 11 ceremonies. These numbers include degrees earned since last commencement season. SCHOOL OF MEDICINE Close, who spent 16 years in Africa and is author of the best-seller "Ebola, A Documentary Novel" and "A Doctor's Story," will speak at the School of Medicine's commencement at 6 p.m. Friday, June 8, on the Health Sciences Quadrangle. Degree candidate Nikta Forghani also will speak at the ceremony in which 93 Doctor of Medicine degrees will be awarded. GRADUATE STUDIES Graduate Studies will award about 341 doctorates and 443 master's degrees, and recognize two candidates of philosophy at a 6:30 p.m. commencement on Thursday, June 14, in Recreation Hall. UC Davis English professor Louis Owens will speak at the ceremony. An award-winning novelist and an authority on John Steinbeck, he earned a doctoral degree from UC Davis in 1981. SCHOOL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE The School of Veterinary Medicine will hold its graduation ceremony at noon Friday, June 15, in Recreation Hall. It will award 103 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees, 22 Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine degrees, six Bachelor of Science degrees and 32 certificates of residency. Speaking at the event will be Dr. Richard LeCouteur, professor of neurology and neurosurgery and chair of surgical and radiological sciences at the school, and Karl Anderson and Cathy Roncskevitz, candidates for D.V.M. degrees. COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING The College of Engineering will confer about 503 B.S. degrees in a 6:30 p.m. ceremony Friday, June 15, in Recreation Hall. Erik Jones, who will receive a degree in electrical engineering, will speak at the ceremony. COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences will award about 1,579 B.S. degrees in two ceremonies at 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 16, in Recreation Hall. Eastin, who graduated from UC Davis in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in political science, will speak at both ceremonies. Jamie Law, a candidate for a B.S. in community and regional development, also will speak at the morning ceremony, and Michelle Leinfelder, a candidate for a B.S. in crop science and management, will speak at the afternoon ceremony. GRADUATE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT Valine of Vision Care Services, a director of the California Chamber of Commerce and chair of the education committee of the Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, will speak at the commencement of the Graduate School of Management at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 16, in Freeborn Hall. The school will award Master of Business Administration degrees to 58 candidates from its full-time program and 55 from its Working Professionals program. Candidates John Barnes and Anne Dubinsky from the full-time program and Jeff Galinovsky of the Working Professional program, also will speak. DIVISION OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES The Division of Biological Sciences will recognize recipients of some 806 B.S. and 30 Bachelor of Arts degrees at its 7:30 p.m. ceremony Saturday, June 16, in Recreation Hall. These numbers are included among those awarded by the College of Letters and Science and the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Mohammad Yusufzai, a candidate for a B.S. in biochemistry, will speak at the ceremony. COLLEGE OF LETTERS AND SCIENCE The College of Letters and Science will award about 2,483 bachelor's degrees in two programs at 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 17, in Recreation Hall. Jennafer Casterton, a candidate for a B.A. in history, will speak at the morning ceremony, and Christopher Loveall, a candidate for a B.A. in political science and international relations, will speak at the afternoon ceremony. SCHOOL OF LAW At a ceremony May 19, the law school awarded 13 Master of Laws degrees and 164 Juris Doctor degrees. Numbers of degrees include those earned since the last commencement season and estimates of those to be awarded at ceremonies this year. The Office of Resource Management and Planning estimates the number of degrees to be awarded by the undergraduate colleges; Graduate Studies and the four professional schools estimate the number of degrees they will award. An audit of the actual number of degrees awarded is prepared later. In 1999-00, the university awarded 6,090 degrees including 4,698 bachelor's, 476 master's, 357 doctoral and 559 professional degrees.
