UC Davis will conduct online lotteries for students, faculty, staff and members of the public to attend the Sept. 28 "Brown/Whitman: Face to Face" debate at the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, campus officials announced today.

Each lottery winner will receive one free ticket to the debate, the first between Democrat Jerry Brown and Republican Meg Whitman. The lottery opens at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15. The deadline for faculty, staff and the general public to enter is 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21. For students the deadline is 11:59 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25. Students will need to present a valid UC Davis student ID card to pick up their tickets. The lottery is limited to one entry per person. Several debate viewing opportunities on the Davis campus will offer additional options for the campus community to watch the debate. Campus Unions is offering the Art Lounge at Memorial Union as a debate-watch venue. The Graduate School of Management will hold a debate-watch gathering in its lobby. The Davis College Democrats club and at least two residence halls are also planning debate watches.

Students, alumni and parents are encouraged to hold their own debate watches as well. Suggestions for hosting these events are available from the Commission on Presidential Debates at http://www.debates.org/index.php?page=guide-to-hosting-a-debatewatch.

The debate will air live on KCRA Channel 3 and affiliated television stations around the state. It also will be streamed live at debate.ucdavis.edu, capradio.org and kcra.com. La Opinion will provide live streaming with simultaneous Spanish translation at laopinion.com.

The UC Davis student newspaper, The California Aggie; the student-run radio station, KDVS-FM; and the student-run television service, AggieTV, will all receive media credentials to cover the debate.

Before the debate, students and members of the community can submit questions for panelists to ask the candidates. Questions should be e-mailed to ask.debate@ucdavis.edu.

Asking the questions will be Sacramento Bee political editor Amy Chance, KCRA (NBC) political reporter Kevin Riggs, and Capital Public Radio (NPR) bureau chief Marianne Russ. KCRA anchor Gulstan Dart will moderate the debate.

The event is co-sponsored by Capital Public Radio, KCRA, The Sacramento Bee and UC Davis, with support from La Opinion and Southern California Public Radio.

Besides KCRA, at least 10 other television stations will carry the debate: KTVU-TV (FOX) and KQED-TV (PBS) in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose area; KSBW-TV (NBC) in the Salinas-Monterey area; KSBY-TV (NBC) in the San Luis Obispo-Paso Robles area; KNVN-TV (NBC) in the Chico-Redding area; KSEE-TV (NBC) in the Fresno-Visalia area; KGET-TV (NBC) in Bakersfield; KABC-TV (ABC) in Los Angeles; KNSD-TV (NBC) in San Diego; and KMIR-TV (NBC) in Palm Springs.
