UC Davis Announces Commencement Speakers

Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will be among the guest speakers at the commencement ceremonies of the University of California, Davis, held through June 20.

Also administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, she will speak at the School of Medicine's commencement at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 11, in the Health Sciences Quadrangle.

Others guest speakers will be celebrity chef Martin Yan, California Assemblymember Darrell Steinberg, Margaret Fortune of St. HOPE Public Schools and business consultant Linda Oubre.

In all, the university will hold 12 ceremonies.

Steinberg, who represents the 9th District encompassing most of Sacramento, will speak at the School of Law's commencement, the first of the season, on Saturday, May 22. Chair of both the Assembly's budget committee and its Select Committee on High Priority Schools, he earned a Juris Doctor degree from the school in 1984.

The school will award eight Master of Laws degrees and 192 Juris Doctor degrees. Its commencement will begin at 10:30 a.m. in Recreation Hall.

Other ceremonies will be held as follows:

  • June 16, Wednesday -- Margaret Fortune, superintendent of St. HOPE Public Schools, will speak at the ceremony of the School of Education at 4 p.m. in Freeborn Hall.
  • June 17, Thursday -- Graduate Studies will hold its commencement at 6:30 p.m. in Recreation Hall.
  • June 18, Friday -- Three ceremonies will be held in Recreation Hall: the Division of Biological Sciences, 10 a.m.; the College of Engineering, 3 p.m.; and the School of Veterinary Medicine, 7:30 p.m.
  • June 19, Saturday -- Three ceremonies will be held. Linda S. Oubre, president and chief executive officer of the consulting firm LSO Ventures and the 2003 executive-in-residence at the Graduate School of Management, will speak to Master of Business Administration students at the school's commencement at 10 a.m. in Freeborn Hall. The College of Letters and Science will hold ceremonies at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. in Recreation Hall.
  • June 20, Sunday -- Martin Yan, known for his "Yan Can Cook" television program and best-selling cookbooks, will speak at both ceremonies of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, held at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. in Recreation Hall. Also a consultant to the food-service and hospitality industries, he earned a Master of Science in food science from UC Davis.
