Two Students Receive UC Davis Alumni Association Awards

Two students who have excelled both within the classroom and without have been selected to receive awards from the Cal Aggie Alumni Association at the University of California, Davis. David Tom will receive the Carl L. Garrison Alumni Scholar Merit Award, and Christina Lindstrom will receive the newly established Howard B. Shontz Alumni Scholar Merit Award. The awards are given annually to outstanding students who received a scholarship from the alumni association as incoming UC Davis students. The $500 Garrison award, which is accompanied by a life membership in the alumni association, goes to a graduating senior, and the $750 Shontz award is given to a student with junior status at the end of spring quarter. The two recipients will be honored at the CAAA board of directors' luncheon on June 6. Tom, a resident of Sunnyvale, graduates this spring with a bachelor's degree in rhetoric and communication. He is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society and recipient of the Edward Frank Kraft Scholarship Prize for Freshmen. During the past two years, Tom served as student assistant to the dean of the College of Letters and Science, helping advise students about course and major selection. Also during his years at Davis, he has been a resident adviser, a peer adviser for the Academic Options Program, a tutor for courses in rhetoric and communication, a residence hall computer lab site attendant and a member of the residence hall social committee. Lindstrom, a resident of Stockton, is majoring in mechanical engineering. She is a Regents Scholar, a member of the Tau Beta Pi engineering society and a recipient of the Marion Freeman Scholarship from the University Farm Circle. A member of the cross-country team, Lindstrom was named an All-American and a member of the All-Academic Team. She has been active with the Spanish Club and spent her winter break in Tijuana, Mexico, working with a community development group called Esperanza, helping build community centers. The Garrison award is named in honor of the late Carl L. Garrison, a 1933 graduate of UC Davis and president of the alumni association in 1973-75. The Shontz award, given for the first time this year, is named in honor of the late Howard B. Shontz, who received a bachelor's degree from UC Davis in 1941 and M.Ed. degree in 1958, and was, for many years, UC Davis registrar and admissions officer. From 1946 to 1963, he served as secretary of the alumni association. The awards are both made possible by contributions from Garrison's and Shontz's families and friends.
