TIPS FOR RISKY SITUATIONS

The UC Davis Police Department offers the following guidelines to members of the campus community who might encounter or witness a violent or armed person or life-threatening incident on campus:

  • If you are using a campus telephone, call 911. If you have a cellular telephone, call 752-1230. Do not call 911 from a cell phone; it will go to the CHP.
  • When you are connected to an emergency dispatcher, first identify your exact location. Stay on the line and tell the dispatcher everything about where the danger is located. If possible, provide a street address, a building name, the floor, office number and the name of the department or classroom number.
  • Stay on the line and answer all the dispatcher's questions. This is critical. The dispatcher needs all the information you can provide to get the appropriate help there quickly.
  • Describe what is happening, being as specific as possible. Give a description of the person posing the threat. Again, be specific: Describe his or her clothing, height and weight, age and race, hair color, what the person is carrying and doing. If the person leaves, report his or her direction of travel. If you know the person, tell the dispatcher who it is.
  • Tell the dispatcher if the individual or individuals are armed. And, if so, describe the kind of weapons they have: a handgun, for example, or a rifle, knife or bat. If the person is carrying a bag or backpack, make that clear to the dispatcher and describe it.
  • If you cannot call 911, get out of the area as soon as possible. If you cannot get out of the area, find shelter to hide behind or to use as a barricade. Look for other ways out of the area (doors or windows).
  • Stay calm and alert. If shooting begins, secure the doors where you are, stay away from windows and stay behind furniture or other items of cover. Report any injuries. Remember that the police are on the way. And stay calm.
