Tips help campus stay safe and conserve energy

Before a blackout

  • Have flashlights and extra batteries on hand.
  • Have some cash on hand because when the power goes out; ATMs may not operate.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full; gas pumps may not operate during a blackout.
  • Cell phones should be programmed to dial local law enforcement agency non-emergency phone number. (For example, the UC Davis Police Department phone number is 530-752-1230.)
  • Be wary of using elevators, which could lose power.

During a blackout

  • Do not dial 9-1-1 to report a power outage.
  • Emergency lighting is for emergency exiting, not for continued working. It will not last forever. If it's dark enough that you need a flashlight to see, you should evacuate the building, as a group if possible.
  • If it is necessary to evacuate a building, take your personal belongings and lock the doors and windows as you exit.
  • Walk with a friend/coworker to your parked car during nighttime hours (parking lot lights may not be working).
  • Treat any non-operational traffic signal at an intersection as if it were a stop sign. Drive at a safe speed -- visibility may be lower when streetlights aren't working.

After a blackout

  • Be aware of your surroundings when returning to your workplace. Inspect your workplace with a friend/coworker for indications that there may be, or has been, an intruder (e.g., open doors, windows, desk drawers, etc.).
  • If you suspect a crime has occurred during the blackout period, call the Police immediately.
  • Do not turn on all electrical devices at once.
