Two UC Davis specialities -- plants for your garden and olive oil for your kitchen -- are the focus of special events. The entire campus community is invited to both.

• Spring Plant Sale and Social -- The arboretum's first sale of the year is scheduled for March 15 in two segments: 9 a.m.-noon for members only, and noon-4 p.m. for members and anyone else. Not a member but want to be an earlybird? No problem. Simply sign up or renew your membership at the gate. Every member receives a free plant and a 10 percent discount on purchases. And everyone is welcome to expert garden advice. The day's program also includes children's activities, refreshments and live music. Location is the arboretum nursery at Orchard Park; free parking in the adjacent Lot 35 at the southwest corner of Orchard and La Rue roads.

• Olive oil launch party -- The campus's 2,000 olive trees yielded a bumper crop last fall, and those olives have now been pressed and bottled in three blends: Wolfskill, The Silo and Gunrock. They are debuting from 4 to 6 p.m. March 19 at the Silo Café & Pub. A wine vinegar named Dinny, after the late Professor A. Dinsmoor "Dinny" Webb, also is making its debut. The party includes tasting and sales (at discount prices). The olive oils and vinegar are set to go on sale at regular pricing the next day at the campus bookstore and online, oliveoil.ucdavis.edu. Admission to the launch party is free. Wine tasting will cost $8 and beer tasting will cost $4, with cash payment preferred. People planning to attend are asked to RSVP at ucdoliveoil@ucdavis.edu.
