The annual Thank Goodness for Staff picnic took over the west end of the arboretum once again on May 12, attracting more than 4,300 staff members to Shields Grove.

This year's theme was "Still Crazy After All These Years," and the festivities lived up to it -- from the Elvis impersonator to the use of a horse for the Bovine Bingo contest and spirited performances by the California Aggie Marching Band-uh! and the UC Davis cheer squad.

Evelyn Montoya of accounting and financial services won the Guess the Weight competition, estimating the weight of a scene of TGFS committee members and boxes of phone books to be 3,150 pounds -- just two pounds short of the actual weight. She took home a gift basket valued at approximately $100.

Stephen Griffey of veterinary medicine triumphed in Bovine Bingo despite the use of an equine substitute in this year's competition -- Magic, a quarter horse. Magic did, however, wear a cowbell in homage to the heifer that traditionally plays the role.
