TEAM CHALLENGE: Tres Amigas capture Aggies on the Move walking competition

The Aggies on the Move Team Challenge this spring took in some very pretty scenery, from the Davis campus to the university’s coastal outpost, the Bodega Marine Laboratory.

And, at the end of the eight-week challenge, Team Tres Amigas had walked the most, averaging 1,219,337 steps per person, or 21,773 steps per day.

The winning walkers, Monica Esparta, Debbie Montero and Yesenia Ramirez, work in the School of Veterinary Medicine’s Biological Media Services and Central Services.

Montero won the team captain award for being consistently the best at sending in her team’s steps on time. This was her second team captain award in a row, having previously won last fall.

The spring challenge drew 71 participants on 13 teams.

“Most improved” honors went to the 13-member Team MOOvers from the Department of Animal Science: Thomas Adams, Norma Andrews, Sergio Arispe, Steven Barry, Edward DePeters, Calin Heinze, Melissa Jordan (captain), Erin Legacki, Maja Makagon, Joy Mench, James Moller, Alisha Nork and Cynthia Stillwell.

They took “most improved” for boosting their average weekly step count by 9.3 percent over the entire challenge.

Team Challenge takes place every fall and spring, while the Aggies on the Move walking program goes year-round on the Davis and Sacramento campuses and elsewhere, like the Bodega Marine Laboratory.

Membership is open to everyone in the campus community (Activities and Recreation Center membership not required), including students, faculty and staff.

For a $5 fee, you get a pedometer and a logbook, and eligibility for incentive prizes (for every 250,000 steps) and raffle prizes. Pedometers cost $8 for friends and family (membership not included). To sign up, go to the ARC’s front desk.

The incentive prizes: for 250,000 steps, a red blinking light, to increase your visibility when walking at night; for 500,000 steps, a hat; for 750,000 steps, a water bottle that includes a pocket to hold your keys and money; and for every 1 million steps, a pin.
