Teaching and Technology

Emeritus Professor Dick Walters takes a look at some of the many visual aids on display at a July 27 reception sponsored by Mediaworks. The unit showed examples of its photography and other graphics capabilities — all of which are available to instructors for their classroom use. The reception at International House was part of the Summer Institute of Teaching and Technology. Earlier in the weeklong institute, Walters, a professor of computer science and medical informatics, presented a program on teaching and learning research. The reception focused on "The Art of Teaching: Visuals from the Classroom" and included a presentation of visual aids shown on large screens in UC Davis classrooms. Institute participants submitted the visual aids. Lecturer Andy Jones, the institute's coordinator, said "mixed media ... will help students retain and apply" the subject matter being taught, no matter the discipline.
