UC Davis' newest agricultural showcase and the university's historic Wolfskill Ranch are the settings for a pair of celebrations:

-- Growing Our Food -- Talks by kitchen garden experts, plus a sampling of locally produced food and beverages. 5 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Good Life Garden amid the new buildings of the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science.

The menu includes handcrafted cheeses, heirloom tomatoes, breads, caviar and smoked fish, and chocolates, as well as a selection of wine and beer from Yolo and Sacramento counties. Organizers said many of the featured products will be available for sale.

The speakers: David Howard, the recently retired British royal gardener who is described as one of the world's foremost experts on organic and sustainable horticulture; Ethne Clark, author of The Art of the Kitchen Garden and editor of Traditional Home magazine; and Georgeanne Brennan, local author, cooking school owner and "slow food" leader.

-- Centennial Olive Harvest Celebration -- A UC Davis Centennial event at the Wolfskill Ranch near Winters, 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Oct. 11. Presented by the UC Davis Olive Center, the Yolo County Agricultural Marketing Initiative and Slow Food Yolo.

The program includes a ranch tour and a sampling of Yolo and Solano county olive oils, followed by a four-course lunch under the ranch's 150-year-old olive trees.

The cost is $90 for Slow Food members, $100 for the general public (prices include a bottle of UC Davis Centennial olive oil).
