'Symphony of the Soil': Documentary and panel discussion

A free screening of the documentary Symphony of the Soil is scheduled for Saturday night (Nov. 17), preceded by a reception and followed by a panel discussion with the filmmaker, UC Davis faculty and community members.

The program is being hosted by the Soils and Biogeochemistry Graduate Group and sponsored by the Agricultural Sustainability Institute. Kate Scow, professor of soil science and director of the university’s Russell Ranch Sustainable Agriculture Facility, served as an expert adviser on the film.

Deborah Koons Garcia’s documentary explores the complexity and mystery of soil. Filmed on four continents and sharing the voices of some of the world’s most esteemed soil scientists, farmers and activists, the film portrays soil as a protagonist of our planetary story.

Using a captivating mix of art and science, the film shows that soil is a complex living organism, the foundation of life on earth.

The reception is scheduled for 5 p.m., the film at 6 and the panel discussion about an hour and 40 minutes later in 1001 Giedt Hall.
