Summer Sandwich Series: Holidays and rumors in the office

A Summer Sandwich Series on Managing Conflict is scheduled to continue July 31 and Sept. 6. Designed for all in the campus community, this series is an opportunity to practice identifying, addressing and resolving conflicts between people who work and study together.

The series began June 27 with "I Know They Are Talking About Me," regarding co-workers who talk among themselves in languages other than English, and how that might make employees uncomfortable if they do not speak that particular language.

Everyone in the campus community is invited to participate in either or both of the last two sessions, free of charge. "You bring the brown bag, and we'll supply the hypothetical scenario," the series flier states.

Here are the remaining programs:

  • "Happy Holidays!" — Noon to 1 p.m. July 31, Moss Room, Memorial Union. This program deals with questions such as "Can we have a gift exchange?" and "Why doesn't that particular person come to our parties?" Organizers said the program will discuss how we can honor different holiday traditions at work, and still honor the Principles of Community.
  • "Rumor Has It" — Noon to 1 p.m. Sept. 6, Garrison Room, Memorial Union. This program deals with the chaos that can stem from what people think they know about workplace romances or complaints of sexual harassment — regardless of whether such information is factual. The program flier asks: "How can we redirect office gossip into respectful communication at work?"

The series is sponsored by the Sexual Harassment Education Program, the Office of Campus Community Relations and the Office of Academic Personnel.
