STORM SLAMS CAMPUS...

Rain storms rumbled across campus last Wednesday, producing minor flooding and other trouble on campus, including toppled trees and a swollen Lake Spafford, above. The storm, due to a low pressure system from the Pacific Northwest and moisture coming in from Hawaii, brought heavy rain and winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 70 mph over the causeway. Hutchison Drive was temporarily shut down so work crews could pump out several feet of water that flooded a classroom in the Life Sciences construction area. On Thursday morning, a 12-inch water pipe on the north side of the arboretum and east of Mrak Bridge was damaged by the storm aftermath, causing several nearby buildings to temporarily lose water pressure — including Mrak Hall, the Art Annex, the Art Studio and the Grounds Office. Employees from Facilities Operations and Maintenance restored water usage to the buildings several hours later.
