Graduates and guests at UC Davis’ spring commencements will hear from leaders and innovators in a variety of fields: cancer care, administrative law, higher education, science and technology, and brewing.

The School of Law is bringing in an alumnus, Paul Igasaki, as guest speaker. Igasaki, a law school graduate in 1979, is chair and chief judge of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Administrative Review Board, which issues final agency decisions for the labor secretary in cases arising under a wide range of worker protection laws.

The law school commencement, the first of the spring season, is set for 4 p.m. Friday, May 14, in Jackson Hall at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. The School of Law is due to award 17 Master of Laws and 193 Juris Doctor degrees.

The university plans to carry live webcasts of every commencement and to maintain each recording in an on-demand archive.

School of Medicine — Scott Christensen, director of the UC Davis Cancer Care Network and a professor of internal medicine, hematology and oncology. 10 a.m. Saturday, May 22, Jackson Hall, Mondavi Center. The Cancer Care Network network links the expertise of the UC Davis Cancer Center, with community cancer centers in Northern and Central California. Thus, the patients of those centers can benefit from the latest diagnostic techniques and treatment approaches, while staying close to home.

School of Education — Susan Hackwood, executive director of the California Council on Science and Technology. 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, Jackson Hall, Mondavi Center. The not-for-profit council, of which UC is a sustaining member, offers advice to the state government and recommends solutions to science and technology-related policy issues.

Graduate Studies — Francisco C. Rodriguez, president of MiraCosta College in Oceanside and a UC Davis alumnus. 4 p.m. Thursday, June 10, The Pavilion at the Activities and Recreation Center.

Graduate School of Management — Steve Newberry, president and chief executive officer of Lam Research. 10 a.m. Saturday, June 12, Jackson Hall, Mondavi Center. Fremont-based Lam provides wafer fabrication equipment and services to the semiconductor industry.

College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences — Fritz Maytag, chairman emeritus of Anchors Brewers and Distillers. Speaking at both CAES ceremonies: 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday, June 13, The Pavilion at the ARC.
