* April 30, Wednesday -- Prize-winning author and scientist Carl Safina will discuss "History and Destiny of World Fisheries" at the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory at 4 p.m. He will explore the effects of overfishing, fishery discards, fish farming and human-altered habitats in the world's oceans. He will discuss the implications of these changes for both marine life and human communities, and how people's seafood choices can add momentum to the new movement of consumer-led efforts to improve fisheries and restore abundant marine life. Safina, a former vice president for marine conservation at Audubon, visiting fellow at Yale University, and member of The Explorers Club, is now president of the Blue Ocean Institute. He has received the Pew Scholar's Award in Conservation and the Environment, the Lannan Literary Award, and a MacArthur "genius" award.
