Have the courage to test your limits, says Tammy McNiff. It's been her philosophy during the 25 years she's worked at the medical center and on campus. Whether it's bicycling 100 miles per week or traveling across the world, McNiff says she strives constantly to discover how far she can push herself.

A program and business manager in the Office of Campus Community Relations, McNiff hasn't limited her horizons on the job front, either, working at a wide variety of positions. She started at the medical center when she was 19 and still attending CSU, Sacramento. After working in the microbiology lab, she went on to work for the anesthesiology department and Services for International Students and Scholars.

Last January, she was ready to move on to her next challenge -- in the Office of Campus Community Relations. "I thought the OCCR sounded interesting and challenging," she says. "I did some research on my boss, Rahim Reed, and decided I wanted to work for him."

"I love what we do," she says. "This office fosters a respectful and inclusive environment, and I think the campus is a better place because of it."

McNiff's main commitment outside of work is bicycling. Many weekdays she drives from her home in Sacramento to West Sac, then bikes the remaining 10 or so miles to and from work. She has been biking the 100 miles per week for more than two years, ever since a friend got her hooked with a 60-mile bike trail. "After I recovered I said, 'this isn't so crazy after all,'" McNiff says.

McNiff also is an avid traveler. She has been to New Zealand, Belize and throughout Western Europe. Her next stop is the British Isles, says McNiff, who is, after all, always trying to find out just how far she can go.
