UC Davis faculty members are honoring a late colleague with a new, annual prize in his name: the Charles P. Nash Prize, recognizing "exceptional achievement and commitment in promoting shared governance and advocacy for faculty interests and welfare."

And, "in the spirit of Charlie Nash, such activity must be above and beyond normal committee assignments or academic obligations, typically spanning a period of time or one's career," the prize committee stated in the call for nominations.

Nash, a professor emeritus of chemistry and a longtime faculty leader, died July 15 from complications of pneumonia. He was 75.

He served two terms as chair of the Academic Senate, from 1987 to 1991, during a time of budget challenges for the university. He also served on various senate committees, including those related to planning and budget, tenure issues and shared governance, and he was chair of the emeriti committee from 1999 to 2002.

The Nash prize is $1,000. The recipient must be a member of the Academic Senate, Academic Federation or Davis Faculty Association.
