SEMINARS AND COLLOQUIA: Writing guest; Undergraduate center; Pixar and physics; The bin Laden tapes; 'Diabolical Couple'

WRITING GUEST: The University Writing Program is inviting students and faculty to a seminar with author and CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin at 4 p.m. Oct. 10 in 126 Voorhies Hall. At 8 p.m. Oct. 10, Toobin (The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court) is is scheduled to give an address in the Mondavi Center's Distinguished Speakers Series.

UNDERGRADUATE CENTER: A celebration is planned Oct. 13 for Undergraduate Studies' new Undergraduate Research Center in 409 Surge IV. An open house is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. and an opening ceremony at 3:30.

PIXAR AND PHYSICS: The Department of Physics announced that Tony deRose, head of research at Pixar Animation Studios,

will lead a colloquim, "Physics Simulations in Animated Movies," at 4 p.m. Oct. 13 in 55 Roessler Hall. The program is free and open to the public.

THE BIN LADEN TAPES: UC Davis' Flagg Miller is scheduled to lead an Oct. 16 Policy Watch seminar titled "Notes on Bin Laden's Audiotape Collection: Echoes of Legality."

The Institute of Governmental Affairs sponsors Policy Watch.

Miller, an associate professor of religious studies, has been studying a collection of some 1,500 audiotapes that belonged to the al-Qaeda leader.

The seminar is scheduled to begin at 12:10 p.m. in the IGA Reading Room, 360 Shields Library.

'DIABOLICAL COUPLE': English professor Scott C. Shershow has been chosen to deliver his department's Fall Lecture. It is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. Oct. 17 in 126 Voorhies Hall.

Shershow's topic: "Dignity and Sovereignty -- The 'Diabolical Couple' of the Age of Terror."

The lecturer is a professor of English and director of the Graduate Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory.
