Storer Lectureship in the Life Sciences

Biologist Allen Orr of the University of Rochester is scheduled to give two talks next week in the Storer Lectureship in the Life Sciences Series: April 20 — “Darwin, Evolution and Design”; and April 21 — “The Genetics of Speciation.” Both talks are set for 12:10 p.m. in 1005 Genome and Biomedical Sciences Facility, and are free and open to the public.

The Tracy and Ruth Storer endowed lectureship, established in 1960 and administered by the College of Biological Sciences, brings eminent biologists from other institutions to UC Davis.

The Atom Smashers

The Department of Physics and the High Energy Frontier Theory Initiative are presenting The Atom Smashers, a film about the search for the Higgs boson: a subatomic particle that could explain how matter, and therefore life, can exist.

The film is described as "part science, part international competition and part human drama."

The presentation is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 26 in 194 Chemistry Building. Admission is $4, or free with a student ID.

Organizers said a question-and-answer session with the directors is planned after the film. Also attending: John Conway and Robin Erbacher of the physics faculty, who appear in the film.
