SEMINARS AND COLLOQUIA: Indigenous writing; Expert on global power; Fruit and veggie health claims discussed; 'Butterflies and You'; Sustainable fashion

INDIGENOUS WRITING: A hemispheric conference on indigenous writing in the Americas is scheduled from May 11 to 13 at UC Davis, under sponsorship of the Department of Native American Studies and the Indigenous Research Center of the Americas, among other UC Davis affiliates.

Dozens of scholars and writers from North, Central and South America are listed among the participants in Discursive Practices: The Formation of a Transnational Indigenous Poetics.

EXPERT ON GLOBAL POWER: Johns Hopkins sociologist Giovanni Arrighi, who studies global power, is due on campus next week to deliver a talk titled "From the Washington to the Beijing Consensus (and Beyond)," drawing on his work in his most recent book, Adam Smith in Beijing.

The talk is scheduled at 4 p.m. May 14 in 126 Voorhies Hall, and is free and open to the public. Sponsors: Center for History, Society and Culture; Davis Humanities Institute; English; Sociology; History; Anthropology; Asian American Studies; and East Asian Studies.

FRUIT AND VEGGIE HEALTH CLAIMS DISCUSSED: A daylong symposium is planned next week on health claims associated with fruit and vegetable consumption. The event is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 15 at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center at UC Davis.

The speakers list includes Clare Hasler, executive director of UC Davis' Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science, and Susan Ebeler, professor, viticulture and enology.

The program also is includes a partnering workshop with industry and UC faculty, to determine mutual interests.

The event is sponsored by the Center for Fruit and Vegetable Quality (part of the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science), the Foods for Health Institute and the Postharvest Technology Research and Information Center. 'BUTTERFLIES AND YOU': The Davis Botanical Society announced a presentation by UC Davis' Art Shapiro, a noted butterfly expert and a professor of evolution and ecology, at a meeting set for 7 p.m. May 15 in the Blanchard Room at the Davis Library, 315 E. 14th St. Shapiro's topic: "Butterflies, Native Plants, Invasive Weeds and You."

SUSTAINABLE FASHION: Designing With Conscience -- A Sustainable Fashion Symposium is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. May 18 in the Technocultural Studies Building (Art Annex). Admission is free and open to the public. Registration and more information: designmuseum.ucdavis.edu/symposium_info.html.

The symposium is being presented by the Design Museum in conjunction with its exhibition Fashion Conscious: Sustainable Fashion, scheduled to run from May 15 to July 13.
