SEMINARS AND COLLOQUIA

‘Schizophrenia and the Brain’

The Center for Neuroscience announced an evening lecture next week by J. Daniel Ragland on “Schizophrenia and the Brain.”

The talk, free and open to the public, is part of the center’s observance of Brain Awareness Week, a global campaign to increase public awareness about the progress and benefits of brain research.

Ragland is an associate professor in UC Davis’ Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the UC Davis Health System. In his talk, organizers said, he will discuss how disruptions in brain development can lead to early symptoms of psychosis in children and young adults, and he will address the advantages of early identification and treatment.

Ragland’s talk is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. March 18 in the Club Room at the Veterans Memorial Center, 203 E. 14th St., Davis.

Education equity

The School of Education announced that it will host the first Capitol Region Equity Summit on March 20 to examine “racialized expectations, achievement and equity in today’s schools.”

Organizers said the program will focus on social and juvenile justice, health equity, youth empowerment and closing the achievement gap. The goal is to create a “regional equity consortium” and an action agenda for local schools and communities.

The program includes a keynote address by Pedro Noguera, a professor in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development at New York University.

The summit's Web page indicates that sign-ups have maxed out, and a waiting list has been established.
