SEMINARS AND COLLOQUIA

Agriculture, environmental chemistry event

The Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry Colloquium runs for two days, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Feb. 16 and 17, in 1207 Robert Mondavi Insitute South.

Organizers said students in the Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry Group will present their research on a variety of topics.

Also, Arlene Blum, founder and executive director of the Green Science Policy Institute and visiting professor in the UC Berkeley Department of Chemistry, is scheduled to give an address on Feb. 17.

Photography and philosophy

The relationship between photography and philosophy is the topic of a one-day symposium scheduled for Feb. 19.

Organizers said four presenters, including two UC Davis professors, will address the ways in which the relationship between photography and philosophy, and, more broadly, the relationship between visual culture and critical thought, open onto some of the most fundamental questions in the humanities today.

The presenters: UC Davis’ Gerhard Richter (critical theory and German) and Blake Stimson (art history); Kaja Silverman, cultural theorist, UC Berkeley; and Hubertus von Amelunxen, visible historian and theorist of photography in Germany.

The symposium is scheduled from 1 to 6 p.m. in the Andrews Conference Room, 2203 Social Sciences and Humanities Building. Sponsors: Critical Theory, Art History and the Humanities Institute.

Equine lameness

The 24th annual Charles Heumphreus Memorial Lec-ture on equine lameness is set for Feb. 20. Heumphreus worked as the School of Veterinary Medicine’s farrier from 1967 to 1985.

Organizers said this year’s presenters will be Kent Carter and Jason Maki of Texas A&M University, discussing practical approaches to managing foot problems.

Lectures are scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon, and case discussions from 1 to 3 p.m. The location is 1020 Gladys Valley Hall.

The fee is $50. Registration and more information: vetmed.ucdavis.edu/CE/heumphreus.html.

The university’s mass digitization

The Librarians Association of UC Davis an-nounced a talk by Heather Christenson, mass digitization project manager for the California Digital Library.

Christenson’s topic is “Mass Digitization of UC,” referring to the scanning of millions of books from UC libraries — in a UC partnership with Google Books, the Internet Archive and Microsoft.

Organizers said Christenson plans to discuss how this new collection of online books is being managed and preserved, how researchers can best access the books, and the future of such large-scale digitization projects.

The talk is scheduled for 11 a.m. Feb. 23 in the Second-Floor Instruction Room at Shields Library.

Law Review: ‘Asian Century?’

“The Asian Century?” is the topic of this year’s Law Review Symposium.

Organizers said the event will bring together some of the nation’s top legal scholars to discuss the rise of Asia and the associated effect on human rights and economic development.

The free symposium is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Wilkins Moot Courtroom at the King Hall School of Law.
