More than 500 men and women and boys and girls celebrated good health and the environment during the first Run for Your Lives, which took place Oct. 12 as part of UC Davis' Centennial Fall Festival. Five- and 10-kilometer runs started at Toomey Field (pictured) and wound through the tree-studded campus. Organizers with the Buildings and Grounds Division hope to plant even more trees with proceeds from Run for Your Lives, which is planned as an annual event -- hopefully around homecoming time in October. The running event's other beneficiaries are health-related: the UC Davis Vascular Center and the American Stroke Association. By merging these causes, organizers said they are showing that "our health as individuals is inextricably tied to the health of our environment." The inaugural turnout numbered 319 people for the 5K and 192 for the 10K, plus 21 for the Kids Fun Run. The event also included a Heart and Tree Health Pavilion. Katie Hetrick, one of the Run for Your Lives organizers, said a committee is being formed to plan next year's event. If you are interested in helping,
