ROLLING OUT ABUSE AWARENESS ...

Kevin Coulter, medical director of the UC Davis Child and Adolescent Abuse Resource and Evaluation Center, offers comments April 28 as he helps launch a new $10,000 campaign geared toward preventing child abuse. The campaign, funded by the Rotary Club of Davis, will place signs on more than 500 "18-wheelers" that travel across California. It kicked off April 28 at the CAARE Center, located on Stockton Boulevard south of Broadway and the main hospital. Formerly the UC Davis Child Protection Center, CAARE annually serves more than 8,000 children under the age of 18, providing examinations, documentation and medical and therapeutic treatment for victims of domestic violence and child abuse. According to CAARE statistics, in Sacramento County alone, the cost of treating child abuse exceeds $98 million, and more infants and children die from abuse and neglect than any other single leading cause of death. TV news crews from channels 3, 10 and 40, as well as the Davis Enterprise, and KFBK-talk radio were on hand at the launch of the campaign, a partnership between the CAARE Center, Department of Pediatrics, UC Davis Children's Hospital, California Trucking Association and Davis Rotary.
