Regents to examine possible fee increases, Los Alamos lab, admissions

UC regents are scheduled to hear an update on the state budget and student fee increases on Wednesday.

The regular regents meeting runs Wednesday and Thursday at the UC San Francisco-Laurel Heights campus.

While discussion and public comment on the fee item will go forward as planned, a vote on the matter will be delayed until more information about the state budget becomes available.

Regents have been considering increases of $795 for resident undergraduates, $855 for resident graduate students and $925 for non-resident students effective summer 2003. Taken with $405 increases implemented this spring, the cumulative increase for both the 2002-03 and 2003-04 years could be as much as 35 percent.

Additional fee increases for professional school students also are being examined, including a possible $1,030 increase in law, $680 increase in medicine and $350 increase in veterinary medicine. Details on the proposed fee increases are at http://www.ucop.edu/regents /regmeet/may03/502.pdf.

Regents also are slated to consider capital projects for the UC Davis Medical Center Tower II project, the UC Irvine Medical Center replacement hospital and a UC San Diego student academic services facility.

Discussion items will include the report of the Educational Outreach Strategic Review Panel and an overview of UC medical schools.

During Thursday’s meeting regents are set to consider action on a proposal to oppose the “Classification by Race, Ethnicity, Color, or National Origin” state ballot initiative — formerly known as the “Racial Privacy Initiative.”

Discussion items will include updates on Los Alamos National lab management issues, the annual report of the President’s Council on the Department of Energy labs and eligibility criteria for freshman admissions.

The meeting agenda can be viewed at http://www.ucop.edu/regents/regmeet/may03.html. Live audio broadcasts of open-session meetings will be available via the Internet.
