Regents consider student fee increases, compensation issues, stem cell research

The Board of Regents met Tuesday through Thursday at UCLA (after Dateline went to press). Below are a few key items the regents were expected to discuss:

  • Student fees — The regents were expected to approve student fee increases for the 2007-08 academic year. It was proposed that mandatory systemwide fees be increased by 7 percent, or $435 for resident undergraduates and $483 for resident graduate academic students. Professional school fees would increase by 7 percent for most programs and 10 percent at selected law and business schools beginning in summer 2007.

In addition, all enrolled students would pay a temporary $60 surcharge approved by the regents in July 2005 to address the loss of revenue stemming from a court ruling in a class-action lawsuit filed by UC professional school students. This temporary fee would be assessed until the shortfall in revenue is fully replaced.

There will be no state budget buyout of student fee increases like last year, according to the Governor's Office.

  • Telemedicine — UC Davis Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef was to address the regents on the campus's telemedicine. See a video on how telemedicine benefits patients at webcast.ucdavis.edu/ucom/2007/Telemedicine/Telemedicine_long_.asx.
  • Stem cell research — The regents were to hear a presentation on UC stem cell research, including its potential benefits, funding opportunities and activities underway in the UC system.
  • Compensation, activities — The Committee on Compensation was to receive, in open session, two annual reports regarding total compensation and compensated outside professional activities for UC's senior managers. UC's annual report on senior management compensation is online at http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/regents/regmeet/mar07/comp.pdf.
  • Individual salary actions — In closed session, the Committee on Compensation was to talk about proposed salary adjustments for employees in cases of new hires, promotions, appointments, retentions and stipends.

The regents' meeting agenda is at http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/regents/regmeet/march07.html.
