Baseball and football, take your pick — or choose both!
Each presents an opportunity to get out and see a ballgame: the Sacramento River Cats vs. the Fresno Grizzlies in a minor-league baseball game Aug. 29, during a UC Davis Picnic at Raley Field; and the UC Davis Aggies vs. the Portland State Vikings in preseason football Sept. 11 at Aggie Stadium.
FOOTBALL — The campus Police Department is selling discount tickets for the Aggies’ home opener — as a fundraiser for an organization that aids the children of fallen police officers.
The athletics department is billing the event as A Salute to Heroes. Lt. Matt Carmichael said all proceeds from Police Department ticket sales will go to Concerns of Police Survivors, or COPS.
The national organization provides resources to surviving families and co-workers of law enforcement officers who are killed in the line of duty. Programs include an annual summer camp for the children of slain officers.
Carmichael said law enforcement displays will be set up at the stadium.
The $18 tickets include reserved seating and a large drink. Kickoff for the Saturday night game is set for 6 o'clock.

BASEBALL — Staff Assembly is organizing the UC Davis Picnic at the River Cats game on Saturday, Aug. 29. The deadline for ticket purchases is 5 p.m. Aug. 11.
The event is open to all UC Davis and UC Davis Health Center affiliates, plus their families and friends.
First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. The picnic runs from noon to 2 p.m., offering an all-you-can-eat meal of hamburgers and Raley Field hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, potato chips, watermelon slices and, for each person, one nonalcoholic beverage.
Here is the pricing structure:
• Seats in the Gold Rush section, with the all-you-can-eat picnic included — $30 for adults, $27 for children ages 2 to 10
• Lawn seating, with picnic — $25 for adults, $22 for children ages 2 to 10
• Lawn seating, without picnic — $7
• Children up to 23 months old — Free
Every ticket sold through Staff Assembly comes with an entry to throw out the first pitch, according to Tiva Lasiter, Staff Assembly coordinator, who added that the day will feature other raffle prizes as well.
Also, players will make themselves available to sign autographs, and children are welcome to run the bases after the game.
Lasiter said the day also will feature a number of other free activities for children, including face painting, balloon art and magic. For a $5 fee, children will be given access to unlimited games and activities in the Kids Corner.
