RECENT GIFTS: Benefits to cancer research, open space, medicine

UC Davis has received almost $45 million in donations from individuals, corporations and foundations since the beginning of the fiscal year on July 1. These charitable contributions support faculty research, academic programs, classroom instruction, facilities improvements and student financial aid. Contributions made in December, January and February include:

  • More than $1.5 million to establish the Codman-Radke Fund for cancer research from the estate of Winnifred Codman of Fair Oaks.
  • $1.06 million from Barrick Gold Corp. to establish the Barrick-McLaughlin Legacy Fund, supporting operations and maintenance at the Donald and Sylvia McLaughlin Natural Reserve. The endowment will help the reserve reach its fullest potential for addressing society's needs for environmental education, open space and scientific research.
  • More than $495,000 in gifts for UC Davis Children's Hospital through the sixth annual Radiothon Sacramento. Donations fund research, patient care, education and specialized equipment. The event is made possible by a collaboration of six Entercom Sacramento radio stations and the Children's Miracle Network fundraising program at UC Davis Children's Hospital.
  • A total of $632,500 in gifts from a number of leading foundations has enabled the Center for Community School Partnerships in the School of Education to form the California Afterschool Network. The new effort will help chart the course for California's after school programs. The network is funded by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the Foundation Consortium for California's Children & Youth, and the Evelyn and Walter, Haas, Jr. Fund.
