Real estate office reorganizes: Changes will help faculty, staff find housing

The university has transformed its Real Estate Services Office to better position itself for today's marketplace -- especially in Davis.

The reorganization means that all university real estate activities and services are now provided by one office on campus. The new plan went into effect March 1.

Previously the Business Contracts Office within the Office of Administration handled off-campus leasing, while Real Estate Services had responsibility for other real estate transactions such as acquisitions and third-party development.

"The goal of this reorganization is to provide the campus with one-stop shopping assistance for all space needs off campus," said John Yates, executive director of the Real Estate Services Office.

The Real Estate Office within the Office of Resource Management and Planning is responsible for contract development and management for all UC Davis property transactions -- acquisitions, dispositions and leases as well as property management functions affiliated with these transactions.

These responsibilities will support the entire campus including the UC Davis Health System and all of the campus's remote locations.

Senior analysts responsible for off-campus leasing transferring from Business Contracts to ORMP are Susan Della, Rhonda Howard Galland and Barbara Frazier.

Yates said the changes will better enable Real Estate Services to support faculty and staff in locating housing in Davis and the region. Kathie Weatherford will now manage the faculty housing assistance programs, including the Mortgage Origination Program. Duke McAdow will maintain the lists of faculty and staff interested in housing, including homes at Aggie Village and the new campus neighborhood.

Another proposal is pending to develop a faculty/staff housing office to provide a broader array of housing services to newly recruited faculty and staff. This is an area of interest in light of the escalating real estate prices in the city of Davis.

"This proposal will be considered in the context of our upcoming budget deliberations," said Yates.

Yates will be joined in unfolding the "new look" for Real Estate Services by Director Mary Hayakawa, who began her job Feb. 1. She had previously served as the director of University Real Estate for the University of Southern California and is a real estate attorney with an advanced degree in taxation.

Hayakawa's lead responsibilities include leasing and lease management, licenses, acquisitions and dispositions, as well as due diligence associated with these activities. Yates, who joined the campus in 1992, is a designated counselor of real estate. His lead responsibilities include partnerships with third parties and management of university-owned properties off campus.

The Real Estate Services Office is located at 423 First St. in Davis and may be reached at (530) 297-4611.
