Punts, pints and Pint with a capital 'P' at Aggie football!

What do UC Davis Brewfest, Pint the dog and the School of Veterinary Medicine have in common? Aggie football this Saturday (Sept. 27)!

The fifth annual brewfest (formerly called Oktoberfest) will be from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on Aggie Tailgate Field, north of the stadium.

Don’t forget Aggie Pride Friday! Wear something that says 'UC Davis'!

Next comes the game, with a 6 p.m. kickoff, Aggies vs. the Eagles of Eastern Washington in the Big West Conference opener for both teams.

And that’s where Pint comes in! The Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever has been retrieving the tee after every Aggie kickoff since 2012, helping out the team, of course, while promoting the School of Veterinary Medicine and its Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

The school will have an information booth at the game, and Pint will visit the booth at halftime.

The 3-year-old Pint belongs to Danika and Michael Bannasch, who are both affiliated with the School of Veterinary Medicine. Danika is a professor (Maxine Adler Endowed Chair in Genetics) in the Department of Population Health and Reproduction; and Michael is coordinator of the Koret Shelter Medicine Program.

They were happy to offer Pint's services for Aggie football. As Danika told UC Davis Magazine last spring: "I thought it was a great way to promote the School of Veterinary Medicine" — including the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, where Pint's grandmother underwent lifesaving treatment.

Now, about his name: Danika and Michael have a “beer farm” (hops and barley) outside of Davis — they call it the 5-Dog Farm. “Pint was dog 6," Dannika said, "so I was trying to ease my husband into it," by choosing to give the dog a name with a beer connection.

Which brings us back to the brewfest: It celebrates UC Davis as the only public university in the nation offering an accredited four-year program in malting and brewing science, and honors the “Pope of Foam,” Charlie Bamforth, Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Malting and Brewing Sciences.

Brewfest tickets include a bratwurst meal, tastings of more than 75 brews and ciders, music by Dank Ocean — and, depending on the kind of ticket you buy, admission to the game. See all the brewfest brands.

Brewfest tickets are available through the UC Davis Ticket Office, and advance purchase is recommended. They cost $35, including admission to the game, or $25 for the brewfest only. Here’s the best way to get brewfest tickets: Go to the ticket office (northeast corner of Aggie Stadium) or call the office, (530) 752-AGS1 (2471); hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Game tickets only are available at the ticket office, by phone and online.
