April 19, 21 and 22, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday - Mountain lions will be the topic of three discussions in Davis, all of them led by UC Davis veterinarian and wildlife-health expert Walter Boyce. Two are public events: a film at the Varsity Theater and a talk sponsored by Explorit Science Center. The third is a research workshop on the UC Davis campus that will bring together all parties active in mountain-lion studies and management in California.

• Tuesday, April 19: As the boundaries between urban and rural landscapes change and blur throughout the state, Boyce will try to answer the question "Can people and mountain lions coexist in California?" This free talk is part of the Davis Explorit Science Center's Cutting Edge of Science Lecture Series. It is sponsored by Novozymes Biotech. 7:30 p.m., Davis Branch Library, 315 E. 14th St., Davis. • Thursday, April 21: Independent filmmaker Frank Green will show his new film on the relationship between mountain lions and Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep. Boyce will answer questions after the screening about sheep, mountain lions and science. The film is sponsored by the Whole Earth Festival, coming to the UC Davis campus on May 6-8. 7:30 p.m., Varsity Theater, 616 2nd St., Davis. • Friday, April 22: Representatives from groups involved in mountain-lion research, conservation and management in California will gather at UC Davis to collectively identify their most pressing information needs, on the way to developing a coordinated statewide research strategy. Boyce and California Department of Fish & Game biologist Steve Torres will lead the workshop. Guest experts from Colorado and Arizona also will attend.
