Provost search committee to hold open forums with campus community

A recruitment advisory committee announced that it will hold two open forums where anyone in the campus community can offer input on the committee's task: finding a new provost and executive vice chancellor for UC Davis.

The forums are scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. April 1 and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. April 2 in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts.

The committee will be meeting separately with the Council of Deans and Vice Chancellors, the Campus Council on Community and Diversity, department chairs, and representatives of the Academic Senate, Academic Federation, Staff Assembly, Graduate Student Association and ASUCD.

Neal Van Alfen, dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, is the committee chair, and Academic Senate Chair Robert Powell is the co-chair. Powell is chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science.

Chancellor Linda Katehi appointed the committee as part of the process to replace Enrique J. Lavernia, who has decided to return to his post as dean of the College of Engineering.

Nationwide recruitments also are under way for three other top executive positions, and Chancellor Katehi has appointed advisory committees for each of those as well:

Vice chancellor, Office of Research — The incumbent, Barry Klein, has decided to return to his position as a professor of physics. Chair, recruitment advisory committee: Claire Pomeroy, vice chancellor, Human Health Sciences, and dean, School of Medicine. Co-chair: Carlito Lebrilla, professor, chemistry.

University librarian — The new librarian will replace Marilyn Sharrow, who officially retired March 1. Chair, recruitment advisory committee: Harold Levine, dean of the School of Education, Co-chair: Andrew Waldron, professor, mathematics.

Executive director, comprehensive campaign — This is a new position. Chair, recruitment advisory committee: Beverly “Babs” Sandeen, vice chancellor, University Relations. Co-chair: Pablo Ortiz, professor, music.

For all but the librarian recruitment, UC Davis is working with Alberto Pimentel of the executive search firm Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates of Monterey Park (Los Angeles County). He is the contact person for nominations, applications and inquiries.

For the librarian’s post, nominations and inquiries should go to Sally P. Springer, associate chancellor emerita, consultant to the recruitment advisory committee; and applications should go to Dean Levine, chair of the recruitment advisory committee.

Contact information and committee rosters can be found on the Executive Recruitments 2010 Web site.
