Policy briefing on improved health for farmworkers and families

UC Davis’ Marc Schenker is due to participate next week in the unveiling of policy recommendations to improve the health of California farmworkers and their families.

UC Center Sacramento is hosting the public program, sponsored by the UC Global Health Initiative with support from the UC Davis Migration and Health Research Center, the Western Center for Agricultural Health and Safety (based at UC Davis), the California Program on Access to Care, and the Health Initiative of the Americas.

Schenker, a distinguished professor of public health sciences and medicine, is co-director of the UC Global Health Initiative’s Center of Expertise on Migration and Health. He also serves as vice provost for outreach and engagement.

“A variety of social, economic and political factors have converged to create a uniquely opportune moment to take action and improve the health of farmworkers and their families,” he said.

Policy recommendations will involve health care funding and insurance, occupational safety, labor law enforcement and improving farmworker living conditions.

The briefing is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 17. UC Center Sacramento is on the lower level of 1130 K St.

People planning to attend are asked to register in advance. Look for the online registration link on this page, which also more information on the program.
