Police implement online reporting system, expand Safe Ride

The Police Department has introduced a new convenience and expanded another:

  • An optional, online reporting system for incidents that include annoying communications, vandalism and graffiti, lost passport, bicycle theft and other property theft.
  • Safe Ride has been expanded, to include round-the-clock service and a wheelchair accessible van — and rides from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. from campus to anyplace within the city of Davis. And coming soon: a smartphone app to book rides.

Online reporting

The new system is meant to give officers more time to address community needs while at the same time meeting the public’s expectation to be able to use the Internet to conduct police business. Online reports receive the same investigation and statistical analysis as if they had been filed in person.

The system is accessible from the main police website (click on the “Online Crime Reporting” tab).

Officers review the reports, and, upon approval, they are entered into the department’s records management system. Copies are sent by email to the people who filed the reports.

Safe Ride

Formerly limited to rides from one place to another on campus, and ending at 3 a.m., SafeRide is now available all night long, and, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. (when Unitrans is not running), from campus to any location in the city of Davis.

Aggie Hosts operate SafeRide, which is free to all UC Davis affiliates. Besides the new wheelchair-accessible van, the service also includes an eight-passenger van and a 12-passenger van.

The hosts provide on-foot escort or rides from 5 to 10 p.m. seven days a week, from one location to another on campus. Then, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., the hosts will drive you from campus to any location in the city of Davis.

The new wheelchair-accessible van is available for rides 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from one location to another on campus, and from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. from campus to any location in the city of Davis.

How to book rides: Call (530) 754-COPS (2677) or use TapRide, smartphone app when it is available.
