UC Davis Athletics is combining two October traditions, football and beer, and throwing in the university’s brewing science program, for an Oktoberfest event that will take place in conjunction with the Oct. 30 Aggie football game.
In addition, the Oktoberfest will be the venue for the university’s first-ever All-Sport Student-Athlete Alumni Reunion.
Tickets are limited for the Oktoberfest, which is scheduled from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on the Aggie Pride Festival Field outside the stadium. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. against Southern Utah.
Only two universities in the country teach brewing: Oregon State University and UC Davis, which has been at it longer.
The people behind the Oktoberfest said their aim is to celebrate UC Davis’ excellence in the field, having produced some of the greatest brew masters in the nation. Some of them are expected to attend the Oktoberfest:
• Terence Sullivan, assistant brew master for Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., who graduated from UC Davis in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree in fermentation science.
• Jay Prahl, who worked for Davis’ Sudwerk while studying in the Master Brewers Program at UC Davis Extension, and who returned to Sudwerk in 2003 to run its brewery operation.
• Scott Ungermann, of Anheuser-Busch, who holds a master’s degree in food science (1995).
The Oktoberfest lineup also includes Lars Larson, brew master at Trumer Brauerei in Berkeley.
Other participating breweries: Firestone Walker, Gordon Biersch, Lost Coast and Russian River.
